Home / Check your ZIP or city
Enter a ZIP code, a city, or a county to see how many of 16 consumer business types Census counts around you, and how crowded each one is per person present — residents plus daytime workers — compared with the U.S. average. No sign-up, and no need to know the ZIP.
What this can and cannot tell you. The table is a supply-side count: how many businesses exist, and how that density compares with the national rate. It cannot tell you whether a business will work. Public data has no rent, foot traffic, revenue, or local demand at ZIP level, so a low count is a question to check locally — not a recommendation.
0–2 businesses. Census does not publish counts below 3. Those rows show 0–2 and are not ranked; the exact number is unknown.
Coverage. This tool covers ZIP codes inside the 500 U.S. counties on this site. A ZIP outside that set has no report.
1. Open the county report for an industry to compare ZIPs side by side and see the map.
2. Check what the data cannot see: available space, asking rent, permits and zoning, and how many of those businesses are actually open today.
3. Treat a low count as a hypothesis. Find out why it is low before assuming it is an opening.
How many businesses are in my ZIP code? Enter the five-digit ZIP. The table lists Census employer counts for 16 industries, plus density per person present versus the U.S. rate. Cells of 0–2 are withheld and not ranked.
How many businesses are in my city? Type the city name. If several counties share that name, the page lists matches. Counts are still ZIP-based Census figures, not a live map of every shop.
How many coffee shops are around me? Enter your ZIP or city and read the coffee-shops row. The same table covers restaurants, gyms, salons, and 12 other types.
Does this match what I see on Google Maps? No. Census ZIP Code Business Patterns counts establishments with paid employees by industry code. A map search can include closed places, duplicates, and businesses filed under another code. The two numbers answer different questions.
BizGapMap — free, no-login small-business saturation reports for major U.S. counties. Built entirely from public U.S. Census, BLS, and IRS data (ZBP 2023, ACS 2024 5-year, PEP 2024, LODES, QCEW, IRS SOI). No forecasts, no revenue guesses — withheld cells are marked, and the few derived counts are labelled as estimates.
